CM Conrad Sangma reviews implementation of Shillong-Dawki road project

The Shillong-Dawki road project, intended to enhance connectivity, is currently facing uncertainty, casting shadows over its timeline and successful completion. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday reviewed the implementation of the Shillong-Dawki road project.

Speaking to reporters, Sangma said the National Highway Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) has been asked to immediately start repairing the dilapidated portion of the road.

“As you are aware some parts of the road are in pretty bad condition and hence, we have made immediate arrangements to ensure that the repair of the phase-IV or the 4th sector, which is more closer towards Dawki, that repair should start immediately.”

He informed that the NHIDCL has given confirmation that they will start the repair work within a few days time adding that the government has asserted the need to maintain quality while executing the work.

The CM said that the state government has asked that the construction work of the Shillong-Dawki road project should also start at the same time.

“The first package (of the project) has also been allotted already, so the contractor to whom the work was allotted, we expect that the person should be starting the work very soon. He has mobilised some machinery and some manpower and we expect that in the next week or ten days more manpower and machineries will be mobilised so that this first sector from Umshyrpi towards 7th Mile and beyond, the work should also start very soon. (We have also asked) that the contractors of the different packages start the work ASAP,” he added.

Asked, the chief minister said the project is faced with different challenges.

“Some because of utility shifting and some places, we have challenges because of land acquisition issues and in some places we have challenges because of the movement of vehicles – all the four packages are important and all have to be completed on time,” he said.
