Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Vincent H. Pala on Tuesday emphasized the need for discipline and scrutiny in accepting new members into the party, asserting that the Congress is “not a dumping yard.”
Pala told Meghalaya News 24, “Congress is not a dumping yard. Many people, when they left the party, abused the leaders, abused everyone. When they come back, they should get a clearance from Delhi (AICC) for all those people. That’s why I am saying when people join, it’s not that anyone can join. We have to examine properly; it should not damage the party by people joining us.”
Pala underscored the importance of balancing new entrants with existing members who have remained loyal during challenging times. “Congress is not only for me; Congress is for everyone. Congress always follows principles, but at the same time, we are not the dumping yard everybody can join. We will look; we will examine. Congress nowadays is also full of young brains. So whenever we take anyone, we should also see that the existing ones will not run away,” he said.
He further added, “The door is always open for people, but at the same time, we must be cautious. It should not be a laughing stock where people come and go, and those who stayed with us during tough times feel disappointed. As of today, many are joining back and are comfortable doing so. What we have done now is to encourage those who want to join to first work with the block before approaching us. We are doing well but prefer to work quietly, especially in areas like Ri Bhoi, to avoid backlash from higher levels.”
When asked to elaborate on his remarks, Pala reiterated the need for a balanced approach. “Many people, when they leave, abuse the leaders and the party. When they return, they must show respect and be cleared by the AICC. We need to maintain a balance so that those who have worked hard for the party over the last four to five years are not sidelined. Both new and old members must work together for the party’s interest. We should blend and build together while ensuring harmony between long-standing members and newcomers,” he explained.
Pala expressed confidence in the party’s current position, stating that after a challenging period, the Congress is now in a comfortable position to fight future battles while maintaining its integrity and unity.
