Is Congress Reluctant to Sever Ties with NPP in KHADC? The Congress party’s stance on continuing its alliance with the NPP-led Executive Committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) remains undecided. KHADC Deputy Chief Executive Member P.N. Syiem revealed that any decision on the matter will be made only after the results of the upcoming District Council elections are declared. At that point, the party will consult with its newly elected Members of the District Council (MDCs) to decide the next steps.
“I will not comment now. Let the District Council election conclude and the results be declared. Only then, as a party and with our elected MDCs, will we decide how to proceed,” Syiem said during an interaction with the media in Shillong.
Despite growing speculation, Syiem clarified that Congress has no immediate plans to sever its ties with the NPP in the KHADC. He explained that the party’s support for the NPP is not influenced by its performance in the 2023 Assembly elections, but rather by the challenges the party faced following a significant exodus of its leaders and legislators.
“We will not agree to say that because we work together in the District Council, we lost the Assembly elections. After many MLAs and MDCs left the party, that was the main reason for our defeat. But after the MP election, when Congress secured 100 MPs, the situation changed,” Syiem explained.
He also expressed optimism for the party’s future, citing a shift in the political mood following the recent MP elections. “People are excited to see Congress return to power in Meghalaya. After a gap of seven years, the people now understand that only the Congress party can provide good governance,” he added.
Syiem expressed confidence that Congress would receive strong support in the upcoming District Council elections, reiterating that the party’s primary focus remains the welfare of the people. “The Congress party believes that wherever we are, we should do our best for the welfare of the people. In the District Council, our main objective is to protect the interests of our people,” he concluded.
