NPP leader and cabinet minister Rakkam A Sangma on Wednesday said the Congress’ past achievements is history and the NPP is the hope for the future of the young people of Meghalaya.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said whatever AICC incharge Meghalaya Dr A Chellakumar had spoken or claim (that Congress was instrumental in bringing developments to Meghalaya) is history, which is good for reading and not implement.
“The educated unemployed students should understand which party, which individual can create jobs they need hope, they need the future not the history, Congress was (relying) in the history and NPP will be in the future for the young people of the state,” he said
Sangma said that in politics, people don’t discuss about all these (achievements in the past) because the voters of today decide what the need of the hour is.
“In my constituency, for last five years, I don’t want to name the village, I have constructed a very good road but in the election the people of that village did not vote for me. Look during Congress time 50-75 years back, during the Congress time the country gets its independence right. Where is Congress now? Meghalaya got statehood during APHLC’s time. Where is APHLC today? “I am the grand nephew of late Captain Sangma. If I campaigned today saying I am the grand nephew of late captain Sangma please vote for me. Will they vote for me? They don’t remember.”
“So whatever the Congress has done in the past, it is in the history (and to be) kept in the books as people don’t vote (based) on this, they want the future, they want the present. So now the people of Shillong and of the entire country decide who going to do what who can deliver the best for the state, is the topic being discussed by the youth of the state,” he added.
Regarding the unemployment problem faced by the youth of the state, Sangma said, “Look every year about 20,000 -25,000 students graduate from university so we generate maximum 2,000 government sectors (jobs) and 17000 becomes unemployed graduates. Where they will go? The educated unemployed students should understand which party, which individual can create jobs they need hope, they need the future not the history, Congress was in the history and NPP will be in the future for the young people of the state. I think people of the state are educated enough to think which party will give them the future security.”
Expressing confidence to win both Tura and Shillong parliamentary seats, the NPP leader said he sees no reason why the NPP will not win the MP elections from the two seats.
He said that the party has given the best woman candidate to the people of Shillong parliamentary constituency and now it depends on them whom they want to send to Delhi.
“Ampareen Lyngdoh is among the best fitted individual to represent Shillong. She suits the Shillong standard in parliament. I think Shillong people will be happy to see Ampareen sitting in the parliament wearing the beautiful Khasi dress in parliament. I think Shillong people will be glorious to see that Ampareen speaks in parliament wearing the Khasi dress,” he added.
