Dr. A Chellakumar, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in-charge for Meghalaya, called on Saturday for former Congress members to return to the party, emphasizing the need for unity and strength in the interest of Meghalaya and the nation. Speaking to party workers, he stated, “I want all the Congress men to come back to Congress, to strengthen the Congress. Not only for the interest of the Congress party but for the interest of the state of Meghalaya and also the country. Everybody knows what is going on in the country today. We welcome them, but we are not giving any invitation to anybody and not running after anybody. If anybody wants to join, let them come forward.”
Dr. Chellakumar expressed optimism about the party’s growth, highlighting the increasing number of individuals interested in joining. “A lot of people want to join the Congress party, and many more are in the queue. We have not sent any filters to them, but if someone wants to join the Congress party, we will welcome them,” he said. He further asserted, “We will definitely revive the Congress party. In this district council election, we will surely make an impact.”
Responding to questions, Dr. Chellakumar discussed Congress’s alliance with the National People’s Party (NPP) in the district council, explaining that the collaboration aims to strengthen the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. However, he criticized the NPP’s alliance with the BJP at the national level for its failure to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule.
“Congress is not sharing power in Delhi today, but the NPP, which is sharing power with the BJP at the Centre, has still failed to include Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule. When Congress joined hands in the district council, we empowered women and the youth,” he added.
Dr. Chellakumar reaffirmed Congress’s commitment to rebuilding its presence in Meghalaya, pledging to work for the betterment of the state and its people.
