Rev. Dr. Edwin H. Kharkongor, Secretary of the Khasi Jaintia Christian Leaders Forum (KJCLF), has voiced strong criticism of the Meghalaya government’s plans to inaugurate the Captain Williamson Sangma State University with a proposed Christian religious ceremony.
“The Meghalaya government should be ranked first in the country for its ostentatiousness and garish display of its intention to inaugurate its first secular State University with a zealously proposed Christian religious ceremony!” Dr. Kharkongor remarked. He further pointed out that, despite the state’s penchant for hosting flamboyant festivals and conducting frequent inaugurations, Meghalaya ranks among the lowest in the country in terms of educational standards and status.
While acknowledging the importance of establishing institutions of higher education, Dr. Kharkongor expressed concern over the fanfare surrounding the January 13 inauguration, describing it as far removed from the values of Christianity or religion in general. He emphasized that religion and faith in India remain personal, while secularism fosters fraternal relationships, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution.
“As Christian leaders in the state, we believe that the zeal and time of Education Minister Rakkam A. Sangma, along with the resources of the Sangma-led government, would be better utilized in improving the efficiency of the education department and addressing the pressing needs of students and teachers in the state’s institutions,” he stated.
Dr. Kharkongor highlighted that education should promote compassion, respect, and hope for a better future. He called for the state and central governments to demonstrate commitment and dedication to fostering learning and teaching, rather than indulging in grandiose displays that detract from the sector’s core issues.
