In a significant development for cricket in Meghalaya, a tripartite lease agreement has been signed on Saturday to establish a standard cricket ground in Mukhla, West Jaintia Hills District. The agreement involves the Mukhla Dorbar Pyllun, West Jaintia Hills District Cricket Association (WJHDCA), and Meghalaya Cricket Association (MCA) for the acquisition of 5.93 acres of land. The ground will feature state-of-the-art facilities aimed at nurturing local cricketing talent.
Weibor Sohlang, General Secretary of WJHDCA, remarked, “The topmost priority in the policy of Meghalaya Cricket Association over the last few years has been to establish grounds and related infrastructure to popularize and encourage local cricket talent in rural areas across all districts. In tune with this program, the formalities for setting up a cricket ground in Mukhla were finalized, and the tripartite lease agreement was signed to acquire the 5.93-acre area for the development of a standard cricket ground with all required facilities.”
Sohlang acknowledged the efforts of WJHDCA, with support from local MLA Wailad Shylla, a passionate cricket enthusiast, and the cooperation of Mukhla Dorbar Pyllun. The signing ceremony, presided over by Eddystone Shylla, President of WJHDCA, was attended by key dignitaries, including Wailad Shylla (MLA), Naba Bhattacharjee (President, MCA), Rayonald Kharkamni (Vice President, MCA), Dhrubajyoti Thakuria (Treasurer, MCA), Weibor Sohlang, and other office bearers of WJHDCA. Representatives of Mukhla Dorbar Pyllun, including Hamran Shylla (President) and Hachwa Suna (General Secretary), also signed the agreement.
MCA President Naba Bhattacharjee expressed gratitude to Mukhla Dorbar Pyllun for their generosity in providing the land, strategically located by the roadside and near a highway with good connectivity. “The site inspection revealed a suitable land configuration for cricket, and the proximity to an under-construction football stadium on an adjacent plot further enhances the potential of the area. MCA remains committed to supporting such grassroots initiatives to promote cricket sustainably at the district level,” he stated.
The new cricket ground in Mukhla is expected to become a hub for cricketing activities in the region, fostering talent and enhancing sports infrastructure in Meghalaya.
