Cyclone Remal impact: 5619 population, 271 villages, 910 houses affected

Shillong, May 29: Minister in-charge of Revenue & Disaster Management Kyrmen Shylla informed that there was one death, 5 injured, over 5619 population affected in 271 villages, 910 houses and 95 infrastructures were damaged due to remal cyclone in Meghalaya.

Informing this, Minister in charge of Revenue and Disaster Management said West Garo Hills District is one of the worst effected districts where around 761 persons were affected due to cyclone, while 173 houses damaged in the district, around 72 villages was affected making is district with maximum number of villages affected.

He also said that around 1243 persons from Eastern West Khasi Hills were affected in the cyclone. Electricity disrupted in most parts of Shillong town on Wednesday as trees were uprooted, electricity Polls were uprooted throughout the town.

Further, Shylla said that the remal cyclone is very alarming in the state but the department along with all government machinery are on full alert to provide safety and rehabilitation to the affected people.

Shylla said that the department has released a total of Rs 19.85 crores has been released to all 12 districts for immediate relief so that utilise and they need not wait for all those norms to be followed.

“They can go ahead because they know the norms of the relief and as per that they can release the money and the procedure to be followed later on” said Shylla.

Shylla informed that as of now there is no information as to which district has got the larger amount for immediate relief but overall the amount released is Rs 19.85 crores.

When asked about the housing scheme, the minister said “As per my knowledge when it comes to the housing scheme (CGI Sheets) which we receive from the departments, whenever we receive it, we give it to the public”.

“In case of any emergencies, whatever can be done from deputy commissioner level, he is doing it and there are times that are not enough with that budget which they are giving to the public. S additional, as MLA I used to give additional whatever because from the MLA scheme we used to buy CHI Sheets” he added.

The minister informed that as of now the department has not distributed to everyone even though some have already distributed to the affected population.

He added that as per norms, direct CGI Sheets cannot be given by deputy commissioner, but under his leadership, however he feels the need to do with the amount of money sent, the respective DCs can find ways and means how to support the family and so sometimes they will give CGI Sheets.
