Delta variant of COVID 19 infection spread throughout Meghalaya

Principal Secretary Health and Family welfare, Sampath Kumar on Sunday said Meghalaya has totally been affected by the Delta variant as this is one of the major reasons for the increase in Cases.

With active COVID 19 cases in Meghalaya has surge to over 6000, Kumar said, “Meghalaya has totally been affected by the Delta variant (highly infectious variant of concern) and that is one of the major reasons for the increase in Cases.”

He also said that the results of recent genome sequencing samples showed that 100 percent of delta variants present in those samples.

The state has sent as many as 75 samples taken from different districts of the state and in all the samples the Delta strain of the COVID-19 has been detected.

“75 samples taken from different districts which were sent for testing are all found to be delta variants,” he said.

The Delta variant of Covid-19 is a warning to the world to suppress the virus quickly before it mutates again into something even worse, the WHO said recently.

The highly-transmissible variant, first detected in India, has now surfaced in 132 countries and territories, the World Health Organization said.

Amidst the sudden surge in the number of cases the health department focuses on vaccination.

“Only Vaccination and COVID Appropriate behaviour are effective solutions to deal with the situation. In addition, we are also focusing on ‘early treatment’ strategy to reduce critical cases,” Kumar said.

The health official further said, “..Also intensive efforts are being made by the State with a ‘whole government approach’ for mobilizing people to take vaccination at the earliest.”

As the COVID 19 situation goes volatile, Principal Secretary Health while mentioning about the initiative taken to address vaccine hesitancy said, “We are making joint community mobilization efforts with all stakeholders’ especially involving Medical teams, Rural Development and ICDS teams to reach out remote villages to remove doubts, misinformation related to vaccine hesitancy.”

“We could see positive results of these efforts leading to uptake of vaccination in the last couple of weeks,” he added.

Asked about the warning issued by WHO, the health official said, “The State also has operationalised new Corona Care Centres and Community CCCs to accommodate those who are infected and can’t afford isolation at home. We have also set up a dedicated step down COVID hospital in Shillong to take care of paediatric cases.”

WHO has issued a warning against the Delta variant and said that 80 percent in past 4 week, WHO also predicted that the total number of cases Expected to pass 200 million within the next two weeks.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus added: “So far, four variants of concern have emerged — and there will be more as long as the virus continues to spread.”

Tedros said that on average, infections increased by 80 percent over the past four weeks in five of the six WHO regions.
