The National Domestic Workers Movement (NDWM) Meghalaya today demanded from the state government to include all domestic workers in the minimum wages board to help them sustain their income.
Speaking to media persons, Albina Nongkhlaw informed that on 16 June the NDWA Meghalaya region will organize various programs to celebrate the International Domestic Workers weeks and also to educate domestic workers about their rights in the workplace.
Nongkhlaw informed that there are over 3000 domestic workers who have registered themselves as members of the union and since 2018 the union have expressed their plight to the chief minister but till date the state government has not paid heed to their demands.
She added that in 2018, the union had come out with the wage card for all domestic workers citing the honorarium for services and the same has been forwarded to the chief minister for approval but till date the union had not received any response.
“We are asking the government to include all domestic workers in the minimum wages board and also to include us in various schemes from the government since we all know the price of all essential commodities are increasing day by day” said Nongkhlaw.
Nongkhlaw asserted that during the International Domestic Workers weeks, the union will also educate all domestic workers on the importance of social security and maternity leave.
