Shillong, August 30: Dr Mukul Sangma, Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and TMC Parliamentary Party Leader, has warned that all political parties, including the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), will face significant challenges in the 2028 Assembly elections.
Speaking to the media, Dr Sangma hinted at internal unrest within the NPP, suggesting that the party’s recent maneuvers to increase its legislative strength from 26 to 31 seats reflect underlying instability. “NPP is in the government. The ruling dispensation, led by NPP, has grown from 26 seats to 31. How they managed to increase from 28 to 31, we all know. It can be interpreted as a desperate move, keeping in mind the undercurrents that threaten their very stability. I’m saying this because I know what is happening within the NPP,” Dr Sangma remarked.
In response to a recent statement by NPP National General Secretary and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, who predicted the opposition Congress’s decline in Meghalaya, Dr Sangma defended his former party. “It’s easier said than done to claim that a political party will be wiped out from a state. Ultimately, it’s the people who watch, judge, and decide the mandate,” he stated.
Dr Sangma further cautioned the ruling NPP, suggesting that the situation could turn against them. “The writing is on the wall. It may very well be the other way around. It’s not appropriate to assume that any political party will be wiped out easily. The NPP will face much more complicated challenges in the electoral days ahead.”
He concluded by reiterating that all political parties, including the NPP, will face threats in the 2028 elections. “Every political party will face challenges, including the NPP. In due course, you will see many things unfolding, and you will see what happens to the NPP,” Dr Sangma added.
