Seven Cases Under Review for Detention Under PITNDPS Act: Social Welfare Minister

SHILLONG, OCT 4: Meghalaya’s Social Welfare Minister, Paul Lyngdoh, announced on Friday that seven cases are currently being reviewed for detention under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act, 1988.

Speaking to Media, Lyngdoh said, “There are seven cases that are currently being reviewed. We want to ensure that the system is done in such a way that we do our homework very meticulously so that none of those cases fall through because of lack of evidence and so on and so forth.”

Referring to the arrest of a 50-year-old drug kingpin, Aisa Khatoon, from Lower Paltan Bazar, Lyngdoh remarked, “The success and the way in which this woman—I will not call her a lady, I think she doesn’t deserve to be called one—who has been engaged in trafficking for many years and has been involved in as many as four cases, was finally nabbed. It’s not in spite of, but it is because of the efforts of this government that she is now in custody, and all efforts are being made to ensure that she is also booked under the preventive and detention measures provided by PIT NDPS.”

When asked about community involvement, the minister said, “In fact, after our recent meeting, the Dorbar of West Shillong have submitted their suggestions to us. We are incorporating those suggestions, and you will see by the end of this year, the emergence of more VDPs (Village Defence Parties) within Shillong city itself.”
