In view of the prevailing heat wave and to ensure the safety of the students, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner on Thursday ordered all educational institutions located around Dangar Area under Mawsynram Block will remain closed with effect from 21 April 2023 for a week, or until further order, whichever is earlier.
The Deputy Commissioner also said outdoor activities in all schools in East Khasi Hills are to be kept in abeyance until further order.
Health Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh said so far things are under control as there is no alarming report from anywhere in the state.
“We are now worried about the heat wave, we are trying now to focus on what should the Government do to address this heatwave that is suddenly enveloping several parts of our state,” Lyngdoh said.
She said the Government is focusing on what should be done to address this sudden heat wave.
“So far the things are under control we have not got any report that is alarming in any kind, so we would like to make sure that the state of Meghalaya has the heatwave effects under control,” the MDA Spokesperson said.
Stating that advisories are sent to Deputy Commissioners to send to schools and institutions to ensure that the Children do not expose themselves unduly to sunshine and outdoor activities, Lyngdoh said, “I think so far we have done well by advising schools in certain parts of the state to shut down for the next two three days to take the precautionary measures.”
She also informed that Meghalaya is doing well in all these fronts as per the national average, and these kinds of programmes will enable the state to participate actively in the entire global approach to deal with the reality of global warming.
“We want to present before the public certain good practices such as propagating carbon-free farming practices, carbon-free industrial practices. We are trying to show that our forest cover is adequately attended to,” she added.
Earlier on April 18, the government had ordered the closing down of schools for three days in the three districts of Garo Hills region from April 19 to 21.
The advisory was given after there has been a surge in the heat wave in the three districts which include West Garo Hills, East Garo Hills and South Garo Hills.
