Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui said that the decision regarding the appointment of NEHU vice-chancellor rests with the central government.
“NEHU is a central university and the appointment of a vice-chancellor is done by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). We (state government) can only request but the decision rest with the central government,” Rymbui told reporters on Tuesday.
He was reacting to the demand for the immediate removal of the incumbent VC, Prof SK Srivastava, whose tenure was recently extended.
Rymbui said the state government has taken up the matter with the Centre whenever there is any vacancy to the VC’s post but there is a procedure which needs to be followed and that is being accordingly done by the central government.
“We are hopeful that the MHRD will surely take a considerate decision to ensure that the best person is appointed as the VC,” he added.
On the demand to appoint a homegrown professor as new VC of NEHU, Rymbui however said, “I (also) wish that a person from the state may be given this responsibility.”
“Having said that, you have seen people from the state having been appointed as VC in other central universities also and it is not that the government of India is denying anything but it depends upon case to case basis,” he stated.
