Expansion of Shillong Airport to Transform Tourism Sector, Says Minister Paul Lyngdoh

Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh highlighted on Thursday that the expansion of Shillong Airport is set to be a significant game changer for the state and its tourism sector. He revealed that a committee, led by the director of tourism, has been actively engaging with stakeholders to ensure a well-rounded approach to the development.

“I have already personally attended two conclaves and met various stakeholders in the tourism sector. The expansion of the airport will be a major game changer,” Lyngdoh stated. He explained that this expansion would lessen the state’s dependence on road connectivity and transportation. “We will be in a position to provide employment to not less than 3,000 more youth in the transport sector,” he added.

Addressing concerns raised by a local taxi association, Lyngdoh confirmed that the committee would meet with them shortly. He noted that various stakeholders have voiced strong opinions on transport regulations, saying, “They have been emphatic in saying you can’t disallow transporters from another state to Meghalaya.”

The minister emphasized the necessity for improvements in service quality, including language, behavior, dress code, and punctuality, as these elements are crucial in a competitive market. “In an open economy, we are short by 3,500 vehicles ferrying people to Meghalaya,” he remarked, stressing the need to tackle these challenges.

Additionally, Lyngdoh announced plans to collaborate with tourism bodies, beginning with the recruitment of 50 youths. “These individuals will be part of the process of guiding, providing information, and generally representing the face of Meghalaya when it comes to dealing with visitors in the state,” he explained, with an initial focus on Sohra, Umiam, and Shillong.
