The state government has decided to allow family members and relatives of patients who died of COVID-19 to keep their dead bodies for 48 hours before performing the last rites.
“We have decided to allow the family members and relatives of such patients who died of COVID-19 to keep their dead bodies for 48 hours at the premises not inside the house for performing the last rites,” Health Minister AL Hek told reporters on Wednesday.
He said all this while the state government has prohibited family members of COVID-19 patients from taking the dead bodies from the hospital to their residences.
“But now the next of kin are allowed to keep the dead bodies for 48 hours before the funeral or cremation takes place. However, they have to ensure all protocols are strictly followed and that family cannot open the coffin once it is sealed by the hospitals,” he said.
Asked, Hek said, “Family members have to follow strict protocols but it is not like before where you have to wear proper PPEs.”
