Fire at Oxford Hills destroys houses of 8 families.


A devastating fire broke out in an old sawmill at Oxford Hills Shillong that destroys the houses of eight families on Saturday evening.

According to the East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Sylvester Nongtnger, the fire broke out in the old sawmill at around 4.50 pm. It is also a disputed land between Gopal Gupta and Pawan Bawri.

Nongtnger said during the inquiry, it is learned that the fire started from one storeroom in the still fabrication where the MCB board is fixed.
He said there were eight family members are staying in the compound. All the houses were completely gutted in the fire. However, no loss of life or injury was reported, he added.
During the incident, there was also an explosion of three cylinders. “The reason for fire incident was due to short circuit,” Nongtnger said.
The SP further informed that the fire has been controlled with the help of 8 fire tenders and due to the timely response; the fire was stopped from spreading to adjoining houses.
