Formation of multiple regional parties dilutes ability of regional forces to consolidate: Paul

United Democratic Party (UDP) Leader and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday said the formation of multiple regional parties have diluted the appeal of regional parties and the ability of regional forces to consolidate.

The Voice of People Party (VPP) was formed before the state Assembly polls, it chose to remain in opposition rather than being part of the regional party force which supported the ruling MDA 2.0 Government.

Speaking to media, Lyngdoh said, “The fact that there is more political party like the Voice of People Party (VPP) is formed; it thus dilutes the appeal of regional parties and the ability of regional forces to consolidate.

Asked if VPP posses any threat to UDP in the upcoming Autonomous District Council elections, he said, “In politics we always have to put our best foot forward, so we have to look at every political party as a potential threat and therefore, should do our best.”

Asked, he said, “The UDP has made a sizeable tremendous improvement as in the past house ,we had 6 MLAs and today we have 12, we doubled our figure in the last election.”

While reacting to the results of Mizoram Polls, where a regional party got absolute majority, UDP leader and Cabinet Minister Paul Lyngdoh said coalition government has become a trend in Meghalaya as after the first Government, the coalition era started in Meghalaya.

The UDP leader said, “Meghalaya‘s politics is slightly different from that of Mizoram because our politics has always been individual-centric and not party-centric, not the party as people vote on the basis of individual charisma.”
