Governor CH Vijayashankar Visits Mawphlang, Praises Khasi Society’s Traditional Values and Environmental Heritage

Shillong, Sep 3: Governor CH Vijayashankar on Tuesday visited Mawphlang village, home to the famous sacred groves, at the invitation of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC). Accompanied by KHADC Chief Pyniaid Sing Syiem, Deputy Chief Executive Member PN Syiem, MDC/MLA Charles Marngar, and Lyngdoh Hima Mawphlang CA Lyngdoh, the Governor engaged with the local community and women’s self-help groups, expressing deep appreciation for the cultural and environmental heritage of Meghalaya.

During his address, Governor Vijayashankar lauded the tribal people and traditional institutions of Khasi society, referring to them as “true lovers of nature” who impart valuable lessons on the significance of preserving the environment. He likened the traditions of Meghalaya to those of his native place and described the state as “Heaven on Earth” due to its rich cultural and natural heritage.

The Governor stressed the critical importance of forest preservation, highlighting that the forests not only maintain ecological balance but also hold profound cultural and medicinal significance. “Meghalaya is a hub of medicinal plants,” he noted, encouraging the community to continue safeguarding these precious resources.

Governor Vijayashankar also praised the matrilineal society of Meghalaya, where women play a pivotal role in maintaining societal harmony and passing down traditions. He urged the youth to uphold the traditional values of their ancestors, emphasizing that doing so is essential for building a better society.

Focusing on the state’s development, the Governor emphasized the need for accessible education and the promotion of cottage and agro-based industries, which are crucial for the economic empowerment of local communities. “Education should be accessible to everyone, and we must ensure the flourishing of cottage and agro-based industries,” he stated.

Concluding his visit, Governor Vijayashankar assured the people of Meghalaya of his full support, saying, “Whatever cooperation you seek from Raj Bhavan, we are with you.”

Later in the day, the Governor visited the Public Health and Engineering (PHE) Inspection Bungalow, where he met with PHE officials. They briefed him on the Great Shillong Water Supply Scheme and discussed strategies for improving and enhancing the water supply in the state.
