Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said that the state government has intentionally decided not to implement the Motor Vehicles Act in order to allow overloading by trucks.
Sangma informed that he had written to the chief secretary with regards to a notification issued by the state government consequent upon the amendment of the Motor Vehicles Act by the Union government.
“The government has intentionally decided not to implement the mandate of the law,” he said while reacting to overloading by trucks which has affected important infrastructure in the state including the Umiam Bridge.
He said that the government has failed to act against trucks carrying overload by not enforcing the MV Act.
“I was astonished to hear one gentleman saying that he knew that the trucks that were passing through Shillong, passing through this Khasi Hills region were carrying load exceeding 40 metric tons. Can you imagine this narrative?” he said.
He said there is no system put in place to address this concern.
The LO further appreciated the Meghalaya High Court for taking cognizance of what is happening.
“And it does give hope for the people as the government has decided to be always on denial mode.”
