Shillong, Dec 19: Deputy Chief Minister and Urban Affairs Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has assured that the government is making significant progress in resolving the protracted issue of relocating the residents of Harijan Colony. Dhar confirmed that discussions are underway with the central government and defence authorities regarding the allocation of defence land for the relocation.
Addressing the media, Dhar said, “Don’t worry, we will try to resolve it. From time to time, I have explained it to you, so I should say it is very close to a final call. We didn’t sleep as a government — we are actively pursuing this issue. It is such a big and long-pending issue, so it will take a little time for us to decide in a manner that ensures nobody gets hurt. That is the plan. Ultimately, whatever it may be — whether right or left — we have to solve it. We are on track as of now.”
Regarding the government’s discussions with the Centre about the allocation of land, Dhar added, “The Chief Minister has met them, but their discussions have not yet reached a conclusion. Even if defence land is not available, we have our blueprint ready.”
When asked about the timeline for resolution, Dhar remarked, “That is the plan, but let’s see. We are trying for it, but let’s see.”
On the possibility of concluding the matter before Christmas or New Year, he explained, “Christmas or New Year may be a little difficult because of the short time and with all the offices closed. It may happen in 2025 only.”
The relocation of Harijan Colony residents has been a contentious issue for years. Dhar’s statements reflect the government’s renewed commitment to finding a resolution that balances the interests of all stakeholders while addressing the complexities of the matter.
