The state government will soon take a final call on the Umngot Hydro Electric Project.

“Towards the end of this month, I will sit down with the officials of the department and we will also take a final decision on this (Umngot HEP). Most likely we are going to abandon this project,” Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Power Prestone Tynsong said.

He said there has been lots of opposition from different quarters against the move to construct the dam over the Umngot river for the proposed implementation of the power project.

Tynsong added that especially people from the area do not want the project to be implemented as they will not only lose their land but it will also have a very negative impact on the tourism sector.

“Taking all these into consideration, we will have to scrap the project,” he said adding “I am in line with what people think about the generation to come so therefore the project has to be ultimately cancelled,” he said.

When asked, the deputy chief minister said it will be difficult to calculate the revenue loss if the project is allowed to happen as not less than 500 – 600 tourists are visiting the tourist spots of the area every day.

According to him, thousands of households are depending on the tourism business.

He further asserted the need for the government to further promote Umngot river as one of most attractive places for the tourists.
