The Garo Students Union on Monday held a public rally in the Karkukol area of Siju, South Garo Hills against the poor road infrastructure in the area.
Villagers, students as well as some Nokmas too participated in the protest rally demanding the state government to take immediate steps to restore road communication.
They said the poor condition of NH-62 and abandoned PMGSY-2 roads, worsened by last year’s floods and landslides that ravaged Siju area leading to loss of lives.
Claiming that the NH-62 is in deplorable condition and has been neglected for decades, the Union said, “The NH-62 is in poor condition and it has been ignored without repairs for almost a decade. This particular road is really important for the residents of Karukol Region as all the vehicles that carry commodities and other essential goods to South Garo Hills District take this particular route. However, the road has been ignored by the concerned department.”
