Hek Defends Demand for Smaller States Amid Escalating Northeast Political Row

Senior BJP legislator from Meghalaya, AL Hek, on Wednesday, asserted that the demand for smaller states in the Northeast is justified and should not be seen as contentious. He dismissed any notion of political rivalry between the BJP and NPP, emphasizing his focus on the people of Meghalaya.

“This is not between BJP or NPP, I don’t see anything between BJP and NPP,” Hek stated. “All the community, like Garo also they want Garo land, Khasi also wants Khasi land, what’s wrong to ask for small state, what’s wrong tell me? Is there anything wrong to ask for small state, that’s no problem at all. I have nothing of there is tussle between A or B I am concerned with the people of the state of Meghalaya.”

His remarks come amid growing tensions between Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, which have triggered a fresh political flare-up in the Northeast. Singh has accused Sangma of interfering in Manipur’s internal affairs and using the ongoing crisis for “political posturing.” The dispute intensified when Singh invoked the late PA Sangma, sharing a 2014 video on X, in which the former leader allegedly advocated for the creation of smaller states in the Northeast along ethnic lines.
