Senior Meghalaya BJP legislator and cabinet Minister AL Hek has said that the expert committee should maintain status quo on the reservation policy, though he has suggested the Expert Committee on Reservation headed by Justice(Retired) Mool Chand Garg that the State Reservation Policy should be ammended without touching it’s originality. Hek suggested that each community should give half of this reservation quota for the people living in Below the poverty line. He said Out of 40 % reservation of the vacancies belonging to Khasi and Jaintia communities, 20% of the same in favour of the poorest of the poor BPL family of the Khasi and Jaintia and the remaining 20% in favour of Khasi and Jaintia communities. Similarly in Garo Category, the BJP leader suggested that Out of 40% reservation of the vacancies belonging to Garo communities, 20% of the
same in favour of the poorest of the poor BPL family of the Garo and the remaining 20% in favour of Garo communities in general. While, the 5% reservation of the vacancies in favour of any Schedule Tribes and Schedule Castes of Meghalaya, 15 percent should be left with the General Category. The state Government last year formed the Expert Committee to review the Meghalaya State Reservation Policy of 1972. The government’s decision followed a 10-day hunger strike called by Voice of the People Party supremo Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit in May last year which received widespread support from the citizens in Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
