IGU North East India Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Championship begins

Around 50 Golfers from all across the country participated in the four day IGU North East India Ladies & Junior Girls Golf Championship which began on Tuesday. The championship will conclude on Friday.

The event is a National categorized event which carries points in the National Order of Merit for Ladies & Junior Girls and also in the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR).

This is the second time that Indian Golf Union (IGU) is organising a National event in Shillong. With an aim to promote and develop the game at the grassroots and grow the presence of Indian Golf in the world arena, this event is being organised.

The IGU has expressed its interest in scheduling more national events in the North Eastern region in the coming months and is hopeful of more people picking up the game in tier 2 and 3 cities of the region.The Indian Golf Union is the apex body of Golf in India and the governing body for the game in the Country.

One of the main objectives of the IGU has been to promote and develop the game at the grassroots and grow the presence of Indian Golf in the world arena.

Like every other sporting events, the COVID 19 pandemic has affected the promotion of Golf in Meghalaya as well,   Gaurav Bajaj, the President of Meghalaya Golf Promoters society and a council Member of Indian Golf union informed that the efforts are on to revive the Golf academy, even as he mentioned that the recent performance of golfers in the Olympic has popularise the game.
