In Garo Hills, people still believe in leadership: Rymbui

United Democratic Party leader and cabinet minister Lahkmen Rymbui on Friday termed the GHADC poll verdict as status quo in as far as the party is concerned.

“From what I could see it (poll verdict) is only a status quo as there is no change,” Rymbui told reporters.

Although he was very much disappointed as the UDP could not even get a single seat in GHADC, the minister however said, “I am happy because this time in many of the constituencies we contested we could secure a substantial number of votes.”

On the reason for the party’s failure in the just concluded polls, Rymbui however said, “As a neutral observer, I am telling you that in Garo Hills, people still believe in leadership not like us here in Khasi and Jaintia.”

“We have seen how Captain WA Sangma during his time he was on one side and BG Momin and other senior leaders from regional parties on the other side. After that era…we have seen Purno A Sangma and Salseng Marak people will vote for Congress because Salseng Marak was the leader and who vote for Purno Sangma when he was coming out from the Congress because of his leadership…and now we have seen that they will either vote for Conrad or for Dr. Mukul… this is my personal analysis,” he added.

Also stating that people in Garo Hills tend to vote for national political parties, Rymbui said that is why the BJP during 1998, have their own MLA from Garo Hills adding it is also seen except GNC, no regional party comes from Garo Hills.

“Late Purno A Sangma he never establishes a regional outfit in Garo Hills although he was a tall leader. First, when he comes out from Congress he joined NCP, a national party and after that, he joined Trinamool Congress, a national party and after that, he formed the NPP which is also part of the national party. He must have realized that in Garo Hills to be successful, we have to have a leader, and people tend to vote for the national party,” he added.
