ISL Matches in Shillong Likely by February, Pending Final Stadium Enhancements: NEUFC CEO

Mandar Tamhane, CEO of Northeast United FC (NEUFC), has revealed that discussions are underway to potentially host Indian Super League (ISL) matches at JN Stadium in Shillong.

A survey conducted during the Durand Cup assessed the venue’s suitability, and certain improvements were recommended to meet ISL standards.

“There was a survey done by the Indian Super League during the Durand Cup to see if the facilities are good enough to host the ISL. They’ve made recommendations, which we’ve presented to the government of Meghalaya,” Tamhane stated.

“With the government’s help, we are confident that any necessary adjustments will be made to allow the ISL to be played here,” he added.

He also expressed optimism about holding home matches in Shillong before the current season ends.

“We are hopeful that before the season is over, we’ll be able to play two or three of our home matches here. The ISL has been very cooperative in making this happen,” said Tamhane.

However, the scheduling of events, such as concerts in December, could delay the required changes. “If the necessary arrangements are made on time, I believe we’ll be ready by February to host those matches. It all depends on how quickly we can implement the changes,” he remarked.

Tamhane stressed that Northeast United FC represents the entire Northeast region, not just a single city or state.

“As a club, we represent all eight states of the Northeast. It’s not just about playing matches here; we want to make a meaningful contribution to the football ecosystem,” he explained.

Reflecting on the support during a recent semi-final against Shillong Lajong, Tamhane was impressed by the fan engagement.

“When we played the semi-final here, we saw great support for the sport—not just at the stadium, but also in 6-7 fan parks organized by the government, where large crowds gathered. This is something we usually see with cricket, but seeing it for football was truly special.”

He believes Shillong has the potential to become a major football hub in India. “I honestly feel Shillong could be the next capital of Indian football,” he said.

“With Shillong Lajong already playing in the I-League, it’s important for us as an ISL club to come and play here as well,” Tamhane said.

In conclusion, Northeast United FC is eager to bring ISL matches to Shillong and work alongside local stakeholders to further develop football in the region.
