Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Meghalaya, Dr. WR Kharlukhi, has urged Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to initiate an independent judicial inquiry into the alleged irregularities in the Meghalaya Public Service Commission (MPSC).
While ruling out any irregularities within the MPSC, Kharlukhi pointed out that his wife, Corina Lyngdoh, is a member of the commission. He expressed concern that these allegations have tarnished his family’s reputation.
In his defense, Kharlukhi stated, “Since my wife is a member of MPSC, what I feel is that it is very clear there is a Supreme Court ruling in which 87.5% is for the written exam and 12.5% is for the personal interview. This ruling came because there were irregularities in the Assam Public Service Commission, and upon inquiry, it was found to be true. Till date, the chairman of the Assam Public Service Commission is in jail. So no commission in the whole of India will go against this Supreme Court decision.”
This comes in the wake of a recent drive launched by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) to raise awareness about nepotism and corruption in the MPSC recruitment process. The KSU also met with the Governor yesterday to discuss the issue.
He further challenged the accusations, saying, “Everywhere we go, it’s corruption, corruption, and the blame is on NPP. What I find is that this is only politics. If you have guts, find out and pinpoint — don’t generalize. Mark this today: if an independent inquiry finds that my wife is involved, the very next day I will resign as Member of Parliament.”
