KHNAM Protests to ‘Do Away With’ Personal Interviews for Government Jobs in Meghalaya

SHILLONG, AUG 19:  SHILLONG, AUG 19: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Monday staged a one-day sit-in-demonstration to mount pressure on the state government to do away with the personal interview for government jobs.

The protest, led by KHNAM’s working president Thomas Passah highlighted the demoralizing effect of the current interview system on job aspirants.

Speaking to Mediapersons at the protest venue at Malki ground, KHNAM working president Thomas Passah said, “Through this protest, we are demanding the state government to do away with the personal interviews for government jobs to the posts falling under Group B, C &D in order to end practice of nepotism and favouritism in the job recruitment process.”

“We had written to the state government on several occasions to the fact that the central government and 23 states have done away with the personal interview since 2016 and the objective is to transparency in the job recruitment by ensuring that it should be based on merits,” he said.

Passah said by doing away with the personal interview, it will encourage job aspirants to compete in different job examinations.

“Because as of now, majority feel that no matter how qualified or educated they are, if they don’t know the channel or anybody who is in power, they will not get jobs in the different government departments. The conduct of the personal interview makes people before applying for any posts to find out who can help them get the jobs. This is very unfortunate. That is why we feel if the state government wants to ensure transparency in the job recruitment process, it should welcome and comply with the demand of the party.

Recently, we have also seen one of the NGOs protesting against alleged corruption in the MPSC, therefore, there is need to put an end to corruption by doing away with the personal interview as it will benefit the people of the state to a great extent,” he added.
