KSU met DGP demands removal of BSF from Sonapyrdi and Rattachera of East Jaintia Hills District

SHILLONG, JUNE 20: The Khasi Student Union (KSU) East Jaintia Hills District today met Director General of Police (DGP) Idashisha Nongrang and had demanded to remove the Border Security Force (BSF) from Sonapyrdi and Rattachera of East Jaintia Hills District.

This came after a video went viral where BSF personnel were seen barging into one of the house in Kuliang village on the night of 19 June.

Speaking to media persons, KSU East Jaintia Hills general secretary KS Suchiang alleged that this is not the first time where BSF personnel had barged into the residence of people living near the international border with Bangladesh.

Suchiang alleged that just recently, youths from Pyrdiwah village were beaten up BSF personnel while they were loading betel nut into their vehicles for transportation to market in Shillong.

He added that it is the duty of the BSF to protect the people residing in the border against encroachment by people from Bangladesh but in recent times, the people are being harassed by those tasked with protection.

“In the meeting with DGP, we have shown her the video clip in which BSF personnel barged into one house, and we have demanded from the DGP to remove the BSF personnel from Sonapyrdi and Rattachera of East Jaintia Hills District” said Suchiang.

Suchiang alleged that the BSF had failed in its duty to protect the people residing along the international border, “There are instances where our people have been mercilessly killed by people coming from Bangladesh” he added.

He added that the people of East Jaintia Hills have lost faith in the BSF as their presence especially near villages has created fears among the people on the border.

When asked, Suchiang said “The DGP has assured us that soon she will convene a meeting with all IGs of BSF to sort out all issues and concerns of the people living in border areas”.
