The opposition Congress on Wednesday alleged that majority candidates of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) are driving expensive cars.
Addressing media persons, Congress leader and Mylliem MDC Ronnie V Lyngdoh said that candidates of other political parties including sitting MLAs and ex-MLAs after joining the NPP are driving cars costing up to Rs 40 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
“After joining the NPP, no candidate is driving cheap cars of Rs 3 or Rs 4 lakh. That proves that money is being given to candidates by the NPP,” he said.
Ronnie was supporting the recent claim made by PDF leader and cabinet minister Banteidor Lyngdoh that he was offered Rs 5 crore to join the NPP.
Former cabinet minister JA Lyngdoh said that chief minister Conrad K Sangma and NPP should have requested the PDF leader to apologize instead of feigning ignorance about his allegation.
“If NPP says that the statement of the minister (Banteidor) is wrong, if you don’t ask for an apology then drop him from the ministry to prove that you are not involved,” he said.
He also alleged the rampant distribution of money by the NPP candidates and said, “Don’t think you can fool the people of Meghalaya by money power. I am telling you money power will not play a major role as there will be a change in the 2023 elections.”
