Shillong, 27th January 2025: A massive fire broke out in Jhalupara, Shillong, on Monday afternoon, causing extensive damage to a residential property and partially affecting a nearby grocery shop. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
According to police reports, the blaze originated in the home of Sharada Pradhan at around 3:30 PM. Superintendent of Police (East Khasi Hills) Vivek Syiem confirmed that the house was unoccupied at the time, as the owner was away. “There was no casualty as nobody was at home. As many as six fire tenders rushed to the spot and successfully doused the fire,” he said.
The fire severely impacted the house, with 80 percent of the property reportedly destroyed. A nearby grocery shop also sustained partial damage; however, most of its items were safely removed in time.
Officers from the Jhalupara police outpost and the officer-in-charge of Lumdiengjri Police Station are currently investigating the incident and assessing the extent of the damage.
