The opposition Congress is all set to field Highlander Kharmalki for the Mawryngkneng constituency by poll. The Mawryngkneng Assemble seat fell vacant following the demise of sitting legislator from Congress David Nongrum early last month. Kharmalki contested from the same constituency in 2018 from PDF ticket and was the runners up.
Talking to Meghalaya News 24, Senior Congress legislator and father of Late David Nongrum Charles Pyngrope said, “Yes we have zero down on Highlander Kharmalki, infact he is the only applicant.”
He, however, expressed hope that with his and his family’s support, the people of Mawryngkneng Assemble will elect the Congress nominee.
“Last election also he was second, I am optimistic that he will sail through,” Pyngrope said.
Meanwhile, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) is likely to field its sitting MDC from the Sohryngkham constituency Pyniaid Sing Syiem for the by-poll of Mawryngkneng Legislative Assembly seat.
The bye-election to the Mawryngkneng Assembly constituency would be necessitated following the sudden demise of sitting Congress legislator, David Arnold Nongrum on February 2 last.
Although, the formal decision is yet to be made by both the parties.
