With no candidate from the opposition, North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma is all set to become the Speaker of Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons said only one nomination was received on Tuesday and from the opposition no one filed the nomination.
Accompanied by Cabinet Minister Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh, Marcuise N Maram and Rakkam A Sangma, and Pro Tem Speaker TD Shira, North Tura MLA Thomas A Sangma filed his nomination.
Sangma will be replacing UDP Chief Metbah Lyngdoh who held that position in the last assembly term.
The election to the Speaker post is scheduled to be held on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma expresses optimism that he will be elected.
“I am grateful to Meghalaya Chief Minister and the council of Ministers and MDA 2.0,” the MDA nominee said.
“I am quite happy, the MDA 1 Government gave me a lot of opportunities to work for my people closely,” the North Tura MLA said.
