Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the independent inquiry committee probing the alleged corruption in the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) has not sought extension of time for submitting its report.

“Till now I have not received any proposal for extension (from the probe panel),” Tynsong told reporters.

The Meghalaya government had on July 29 notified the constitution of this committee. The panel, given a three-month window to submit its report, is yet to receive the necessary papers from the MeECL. The big question remains will the commission miss the deadline?

The inquiry committee headed by Justice (retired) RN Mishra of the Allahabad High Court was constituted following various allegations of corruption in the MeECL.

Asked, Tynsong however said that such a proposal has to come from the chairperson of the probe panel.

“Maybe he will seek extension, we are open for that but till now I have not received anything though the terms of reference and date fixed for submission of report is for three months.”

He further maintained that the government is bound to give extension provided that the proposal comes from the concerned panel.

Stating that the question of delaying tactics does not arise, Tynsong said, “You need to understand one thing, this is an independent inquiry committee headed by a retired judge. I think you should not have any doubt on this otherwise the integrity of the inquiry commission or committee is diluted. Therefore, we should not question the committee, they are on the job right now.”

He added, “Delaying tactics does not arise as we have already authorized, we have already constituted, we have already notified so it is now on the job to complete it at the earliest possible.”

The committee has been tasked with probing records and making recommendations on the functioning of MeECL and its three subsidiary companies – Meghalaya Power Generation Corporation Ltd, Meghalaya Power Transmission Corporation Ltd and Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd.

The probe covers the period from April 1, 2010, to March 31, 2021.
