Meghalaya Assembly Reaffirms Decision on Merger, Emphasizes Right to Appeal in Democratic Process

Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma has reiterated that his ruling on the merger of three Congress legislators with the National People’s Party (NPP) remains in effect, while affirming that every individual or party has the right to appeal any decision in a democratic setup.

“This is a democratic setup, everybody has a right to appeal, I have given my opinion, I have given my decision and that decision still stands but everybody is welcome to challenge it,” the Speaker stated.

Sangma explained that his office follows a meticulous process for handling appeals, which includes a thorough review of the content and consultation with legal experts.

“Every time the appeal is done, we study the contents of the appeal, we refer it to our legal experts, we take legal advice accordingly we give our reply,” he said.

Despite the attempt to again appeal against the merger of three Congress legislators to the NPP, the Speaker emphasized on ensuring that all parties are granted a fair opportunity to present their case.
