Meghalaya has reported 4,212 active tuberculosis (TB) patients currently undergoing treatment, with the highest number of cases—1,985—recorded in East Khasi Hills district. In its intensified efforts to achieve the ambitious goal of TB elimination by 2025, the state has launched the 100-day Ni-Kshay Shivir Campaign, focusing on five districts with high TB prevalence. Additionally, the state’s health department has introduced the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care Program to strengthen its combat against the disease.
Speaking at the campaign’s launch at Mawlai Mawroh PHC, Ram Kumar S, IAS, Mission Director, National Health Mission, highlighted the critical objectives of the initiative. “The program is launched in all districts of Meghalaya, particularly the five districts—West Garo Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Garo Hills, South Garo Hills, and East Khasi Hills—where the burden of TB is slightly on the higher side,” he said.
Explaining the campaign’s scope, he added, “This national-level 100-day TB campaign starts today and will continue for three months, culminating in March. The key idea is to identify TB cases early, place them on treatment regimens, follow up with nutritional support, and prevent the spread of the disease. Our ultimate goal is to make the country TB-free by 2025.”
Ram Kumar S also noted that Meghalaya’s current treatment success rate stands at 87-88%, slightly below the ideal target of 90%. “In order to ensure that every person gets complete care, we have launched the Meghalaya Comprehensive TB Care Program today,” he said.
Joram Beda, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Health & Family Welfare, emphasized the strides made in testing and stabilization of case incidence. “The government is committed to providing adequate facilities to control and eliminate TB,” he assured.
The event also recognized the resilience of TB survivors, celebrating their achievements and their involvement in skill development programs. A Ni-Kshay Vahan vehicle was flagged off to further support TB control initiatives in the state.
