Senior Meghalaya BJP legislator and Cabinet Minister AL Hek announced that he will travel to Delhi on November 24 as part of a state BJP delegation. The team will meet Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to address the concerns raised by agitating students of North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).
“I am going to Delhi on 24th November, I have already asked the office of the Union Education Minister, so they have assured me from the office he will be available so I will be meeting him to brief the NEHU issue. At the same time I have told our prabhari also Anil Anthony, I briefed him about the problem NEHU is facing and definitely both I and him jointly we are going with the BJP delegation from Meghalaya to meet the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan,” Hek told Meghalaya News 24.
“The delegation will discuss the demands of NEHU students and the issues they have been raising for weeks,” The state BJP leader said.
The protests, which began on November 5, center on demands for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Prabha Shukla, Registrar Omkar Singh, and Deputy Registrar Amit Gupta, citing alleged administrative incompetence.
The students’ agitation has included hunger strikes, campus gate blockades, and effigy burnings as acts of symbolic protest. Although the hunger strike was temporarily suspended on Wednesday, the students remain firm in their resolve, stating, “We will not stop until our demands are met.”
The BJP delegation’s visit highlights the growing urgency to address the crisis and find a resolution to the grievances of NEHU students. The meeting with the Union Education Minister aims to explore pathways for resolving the ongoing unrest and ensuring the university’s smooth functioning.
