In a move to support students and visitors from Meghalaya, the state Cabinet has approved the purchase of a building in Bangalore to serve as a dedicated accommodation facility. The decision aims to address the growing demand for affordable lodging, particularly for students pursuing higher education in the city.
Announcing the decision, Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh stated, “The Cabinet also approved the purchase of a building in Bangalore for the accommodation of visitors from Meghalaya to that city and more specially for the student population. This proposed building located in the city of Bangalore will accommodate at any point of time in two dorms – 50 for boys and 50 for girls.”
Highlighting the necessity of the facility, Lyngdoh noted, “Bangalore is one of the most visited areas by Meghalayans, and we also have quite a number of students pursuing various courses in that city.”
When asked about plans to construct a Meghalaya House in Bangalore, Lyngdoh clarified that while such a project is being considered, the immediate priority is to support students struggling with high accommodation costs. “As of now, the immediate need is to cater to the student population. A Meghalaya House is also in the pipeline, but in order to address the immediate need where a number of students are finding it very difficult to find accommodation and the rates are very exorbitant… creating a Meghalaya House would need more, like the creation of more posts and placement of officers.”
To meet this urgent requirement, the government has decided to establish the guest house first. “So, in order to address the immediate need, we will first create this facility of a guest house specially dedicated to visitors and the student population of the state,” he added.
