In a move aimed at easing congestion in Shillong, the Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the relocation of the Police Reserve to New Shillong Township. This decision follows the earlier proposal to shift the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly and the State Secretariat to the new township as part of a broader decongestion plan.
Announcing the decision, Cabinet Minister and government spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh said, “In order to further decongest Shillong, the Police Reserve will now be relocated to Tynring, which falls under New Shillong Township. An area of 50 acres will be allotted for the creation of the Police Reserve.”
Highlighting the strategic importance of the location, Lyngdoh stated, “This particular area will serve as a corridor between the administrative city and the Knowledge City of New Shillong Township. The Cabinet has approved this proposal, and we will go ahead with setting up the Police Reserve, which will also help in the process of decongesting the state capital.”
The government has also decided to shift the Shillong District Jail as part of the relocation plan. Lyngdoh confirmed that work on the Police Reserve would begin without delay. “Now that the Cabinet’s approval has been given, work on the creation of the Police Reserve will start immediately. We will decongest the area. The Shillong District Jail will also be shifted,” he said.
Regarding the implementation timeline, Lyngdoh assured that the process would commence swiftly. “We will first move to New Shillong and then decide on the plots of land. It will happen immediately, necessary measures will be taken, and once we shift, the process will start. We will get it within the next fiscal year,” he added.
