Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday said Communities of Meghalaya can pioneer the conservation based lifestyle for the world and create a new social and economic order.
Addressing the inaugural session of the three day Think20 Conference titled “Nature Solves: A New Framework for Our Sustainable Future” in Shillong, Chief Minister Sangma said the indigenous practices shouldn’t be ignored. The Chief minister spoke in length about the community based system that is adopted here in the state.
He said the aspects of tradition is missing from the Panchayati Raj as he advocated for Meghalaya model.
Talking about community based governance, he said, “Meghalaya is a very strong advocate of community based governance and our society is our greatest strength, which makes activities possible at the grassroots”.
“We have a decentralized Governance system to address the issues at the grassroot level through the communities, who are the integral part of our society. Our communities have always been at the forefront in preserving and conserving our age old traditions and values”, he added.
He said that the community based governance model of Meghalaya could be replicated in other States.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief minister further spoke about the upcoming Climate Museum cum Centre at upper Shillong.
The CM said, the meeting has brought diverse minds and green intellectuals to find possible sustainable blue prints for the future.
Earlier, Chief Secretary DP Walang spoke about the payment for Ecosystem project in Meghalaya.
Launched by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on June 13, 2022, the scheme provides benifits to thousands of farmers.
The Chief Secratary also spoke about mapping of 60,000 springs. Calling scientific mining a game changer, Wahlang spoke about green infrastructure and urban planning.
He dwelt on the crucial initiative of Electric vehicle policy and water policy of the state Government.
The program was also attended by Eenam Gambhir, Joint Secretary (G20) at the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; and Samir Saran, T20 Chair and President of the Observer Research Foundation, India.
Eminent members of the multilateral and think tank community were present.
