Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has asked the District Administration of East Khasi hills to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the Thana Road fire incident.
In his social Media page, Sangma wrote, “Concerned about the fire incident that occurred today in Jail Road, Police Bazar, Shillong that caused huge loss to life and property. Have asked the District Administration to assess the damages and to assist the families affected by the incident.”
One person died of asphyxiation after inhaling toxic smoke as a massive fire engulfed a building which housed Janata Furniture near Payal Cinema at Thana Road, Police Bazar on Saturday afternoon.
The reason for the fire is yet to be ascertained.
The fire service personnel and the central forces were engaged in dousing the fire.
The Chief Minister while appreciating the state fire service department as well as the central forces, said efforts are on to ensure the area is completely safe.
“The Indian Air force, Indian Army, Assam Rifles, SDRF, Meghalaya Police, Fire Department and District Administration have together worked very hard and are playing a crucial role in dousing the fire and managing the situation in Police Bazar, Shillong. We thank them for their swift response and for standing by till this hour. Efforts are on to ensure the area is completely safe.” Sangma said.
