Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Thursday emphasized the growing passion for football among the state’s youth and outlined his vision to make Meghalaya a significant football hub in India.

Speaking at an event, the Chief Minister remarked, “Football is a sport that inspires immense passion, especially among the youth. We have a much larger vision, and with NorthEast United FC and other clubs from the region coming together, we are confident that Meghalaya will become a key center for football.”

The Chief Minister highlighted the state’s commitment to fostering football at the grassroots level.

“With the establishment of a football academy here, we are confident it will be a major boost for the sport. We are also launching several grassroots programs to identify young talent and nurture them from an early age,” he said.

Sangma further emphasized the importance of players’ roles as icons for local youth, stating, “You are not just playing for NorthEast United FC, but also for Meghalaya and its youth. You are role models for the next generation.”

Sangma also celebrated NorthEast United FC’s recent victory in the prestigious Durand Cup. “Winning the Durand Cup is a tremendous honor. The Durand Cup carries a rich legacy, and bringing the trophy to Meghalaya is a proud moment for the entire football community,” he added.

The event, organized by NorthEast United FC in collaboration with the Department of Sports and Youth Welfare, the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA), and Meghalaya Tourism, included an Open Training & Media Day in Shillong. This gave fans the chance to see the Durand Cup Trophy and meet the team. NorthEast United FC’s CEO Mandar Tamhane, head coach Juan Pedro Benali, and players Redeem Tlang, Michel Zabaco, and Parthib Gogoi addressed the media, discussing the club’s success and their aspirations for the future.
