Meghalaya Congress Chief Backs ‘Call for Probe’ into Alleged Drug and Coal Money Use

SHILLONG, SEP 20: Opposition Congress chief Vincent H Pala on Friday expressed full support to the recent demand made by the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma for setting up a thorough investigation into the alleged using of illegal money from drugs and coal by the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).

“I really support Mukul’s idea that we should have an investigation. The investigation should be at least for the last 10 years,” Pala stated, emphasizing the need for a thorough inquiry.

He further alleged, “Let me tell you, illegal coal activities started in the last 10 years. The illegal transportation of coal has been happening for the last decade, and drugs even longer. For instance, today, if you transport chicken from Guwahati to Shillong, you have to pay between Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per pickup. This has been reported in the news and on social media. Similarly, moving coal from Jaintia Hills to Guwahati costs Rs 96,000. If you transport limestone, it’s Rs 20,000. Everything involves an ‘entry fee,’ and this practice started in the last 10 years.”

Pala’s allegations highlight long-standing concerns about illegal activities in the region, which he claims have been ongoing for over a decade.
