Shillong, December 4, 2024: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma informed that the state government is actively working on the expansion of Shillong Airport’s runway, with progress moving forward in a “very, very aggressive and positive manner.” The initiative is aimed at improving the airport’s capacity and connectivity to major metropolitan cities, paving the way for direct flights from major metros like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru. The project is being pursued aggressively at both state and central levels, with the Chief Minister expressing optimism about its transformative impact on Meghalaya’s connectivity and development.

Speaking on Wednesday, the Chief Minister highlighted the aggressive approach taken by the state government to ensure the project advances smoothly. He stated, “We are working very aggressively for the expansion of our runway at Shillong Airport. Whether it’s the extension of the runway from the Ministry’s side or the activities at the state level, everything is moving in the right direction.”

The Chief Minister emphasized the transformative potential of this development for Shillong and the state. He expressed optimism about aligning the completion of the airport upgrade with other key projects, including new hotels and infrastructure initiatives. “I am hopeful that as this hotel and other large projects get completed, we will also see larger and commercial aircraft landing directly into Shillong.
