National, September 24, 2024: In a landmark initiative, the Government of Meghalaya has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) to enhance health, nutrition, and agriculture outcomes in the state. This collaboration, which places Meghalaya alongside Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the third state in India to partner with the Gates Foundation, aims to address key areas such as maternal and newborn health, family planning, nursing education, and agriculture and livestock development.

The MoU was signed in the presence of   Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma and Health & Family Welfare and Agriculture Minister, Dr. Mazel Ampareen Lyngdoh. Representing BMGF was M. Hari Menon, Director of the India Country Office, while Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Health & Family Welfare Department, signed on behalf of the state.

The agreement marks a four-year commitment to improving health outcomes through comprehensive and sustainable interventions. Speaking at the event, Chief Minister Sangma expressed his optimism about the partnership: “We are excited to collaborate with the Gates Foundation. This partnership will help us address institutional challenges and enhance our ability to improve the quality of life for our citizens. We aim to ensure that our efforts, especially regarding maternal health and the female population, lead to real change.”

Health Minister Dr. Lyngdoh highlighted the importance of community participation and replicable models for the region. “We are thrilled to have the Gates Foundation’s support in addressing our healthcare gaps. We hope this partnership will serve as a model for the North East and beyond,” she said.

The partnership focuses on 12 critical areas, including comprehensive primary healthcare, maternal and neonatal health, family planning, nutrition, nursing education, and digital health. The Gates Foundation will provide financial and technical support to develop IT solutions for primary healthcare, improve family planning, tackle childhood wasting, and boost nursing education.

M. Hari Menon, Director at BMGF, emphasized the importance of equitable access to health services: “Our partnership with the Government of Meghalaya underscores our commitment to strengthening health systems and achieving long-term, sustainable health outcomes for the people of Meghalaya.”

Sampath Kumar, Principal Secretary, called the collaboration a “significant step” toward ensuring quality healthcare for Meghalaya’s population. “Through this partnership, we aim to create a robust and sustainable health system that will serve future generations,” he added.

In addition to health, the collaboration extends to agriculture and livestock development, with a focus on building value chains and supporting small farmers in the state. The partnership also aims to improve supply chain management for drugs and diagnostics, and foster research-based decision-making through digital health platforms.

The Meghalaya State Health Society will coordinate the implementation of activities funded by BMGF, ensuring that the partnership delivers on its promise of improved healthcare for all.

This collaboration between the Government of Meghalaya and the Gates Foundation represents a significant step forward in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, with a particular focus on health and nutrition.
