Meghalaya Govt asks Education dept to submit report on fee structure of Govt aided and Non Govt aided institutes

Expressing concern over the exorbitant fees charged by educational institutions in Meghalaya, Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma informed that he has directed officials of the Education Department to submit a report on the fee structure of Government aided and Non Government aided institutes in the state.

The Hynniewtrep Youths’ Council in its memorandum to Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma has demanded fixation and regulation of Fees in Government aided and non-Government aided educational institutions.

Reacting to this demand, Sangma said, this is something which is burden on the students.

“We have asked our departments to ask for the data to compare, we will discuss and we will work out how to work out with the institutions because there are certain private institutions which has very less support from the Government side, certain institution which get support from the Government side, this is something to be discussed,” the Education Minister said.

“We have seek reports from the institutions and even from the private institutions just to make the comparison study and accordingly we will sit and decide and will issue certain advisory,” he added.

Earlier, HYC in the memorandum said “It is a fact that the majority of the educational institutions in the State are Government aided and non-government aided institutions and we appreciate the contributions made by all of them in taking our State forwards in this sector.”

“However, we cannot also deny the fact that there should be a system in place to check the fee structures and fixation of fees for all these educational institutions in the State so that education does not become a service beyond the reach of the lower strata of the society,” the organisation added.

“Education should be made accessible to all sections of the Society and hence a system should be put in place for the regulation of the fees in these institutions in the State by enacting an appropriate legislation at the earliest,” the memorandum said.
