Meghalaya Govt assures to address water crisis problem in East and West Shillong

The state government has assured to immediately address the water crisis faced by the residents of Shillong particularly in East Shillong and West Shillong.

Speaking to reporters after a meeting convened by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, East Shillong MLA Ampareen Lyngdoh said that the reason behind the water crisis was due to the fluctuation and tripping of power lines leading to insufficient power being pumped to Mawphlang which is our main generator of water supply.

She said, “That has been sorted out. We have been given an assurance that the power supply to Mawphlang will remain uninterrupted by adopting various methods which are very technical in nature.”

She informed that people are spending a lot of money to augment water supply to their homes.

She said, “Even an MLA like me has just in the last 15 days paid 12,000 rupees for water in my own home so you can imagine how it impacts the common man. Therefore, I am looking forward to this problem being resolved quickly.”

She also expressed concern  over the delay in commissioning of the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) Phase-III. Lyngdoh said the matter was also discussed in the meeting and it is expected that all these storages of water to Shillong will soon be commissioned.

The MLA said the government has assured to provide the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) with five additional water tankers during the crisis periods.

“I hope the entire exercise will ensure the problem is resolved positively. We are very concerned as we had so much rain but no water coming to our taps. I am also concerned as citizens are becoming frustrated and restless,” she said.
