Meghalaya Govt to come up with scientific mining licenses within this year

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced the state government’s decision to come up with scientific mining licenses within this year.

Addressing the 73rd Republic Day celebrations at Shillong on Wednesday, Sangma reminded that the government had taken the decision to challenge the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ban and was also successful in lifting the ban.

“……..within this year of our 50 years, our Golden Jubilee, we will come out with scientific mining licenses which is under process as we speak,” Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said.

Stating that the state Government took the decision to challenge the NGT ban, Sangma said,

“…we are in the process of the ‘just’ transition where we are ensuring, that people are going to be able to mine in a scientific manner, respecting the environment, respecting the system, respecting the people.”

The Chief Minister further said, in coal mining there is a need justified transition, even as he mentioned that the state Government is working towards ensuring that really happens.

“… the fact that the ownership of this coal belongs with the people and hence, we took the tough decision knowing that there are challenges and the possibility of us losing the case,” he added.
